SERBIA ANNOUNCES RISMAN CUP SQUADS

20 Feb 2015

The Serbian Rugby League Federation has announced two squads for the third edition of Risman Cup, the traditional season kick-off representative format. The game, named after famous British Risman family, will be played at Belgrade’s BASK Arena on Saturday 21 February and will gather the nation’s best local players divided in two teams named after the sons of Rugby League Hall of Famer Augustus Risman, Bev and John, with the latter a former Serbia coach and credited with the progress of the sport in the country.

The players will have the opportunity to impress Serbia head coach Marko Janković and try to gain the place in the national squad who currently sits on the top of table of European Championship B. The current all-time score is tied at one-all, with Team Bev Risman holding the title after last year's 36-20 win.

By the rules of the competition, the award for the coach of the winning team is the chance to defend title, while the man of the match award will be celebrated by the players of the both teams and carried out onto the pitch on their shoulders in rememberance to impersonate famous picture of Gus Risman holding the 1952 Challenge Cup trophy while at Workington Town.

Current holder Nenad Tomić picked a 21-man squad consisted of the mixture of proven international and emerging youngsters. His counterpart, the challenger Ljubomir Bukvić also has a strong outfit available with the national team captain and vice-captain in his ranks.
