SERBIAN KICK OFF SIGNALS EXPANSIONIST AIMS

24 Mar 2011

The tenth Serbian Championship kicked off on Saturday 19th March 2011 with first-round matches between champions Rugby League Club Dorcol and Rugby League Club Radnicki from Nova Pazova. The champion Spiders started strongly, quickly breaking the resistance of the young Rugby League Club Radnicki outfit. Dorcol won at a canter, 60:6, and announced the fierce title ambitions. The following day was not so routine, with Rugby League Club Car Lazar, after a 200 km trip to Belgrade from their home town, Krusevac, beating last year’s runners up Red Star Belgrade 12-6.

The decade edition of the Serbian Championship has seen a re-shuffle by the SRLF. Clubs are divided into first division - Dorcol, Red Star, Radnicki and Car Lazar – and second division clubs - Stari Grad, Nis, Morava and Soko. Former title threat Rugby League Club Podbara from Novi Sad  has  decided to develop youth players only for the time being. The club’s new leadership has already initiated the young players and on Sunday 13 March 2011 played a friendly match with the Nova Pazova junior clubs.

Nebojsa Sretenovic, president of the SRLF, said in a statement:

“The new format of the competition fits our Development Strategy 2011-2014. We plan to expand the first division with one club from the second division every year to create stable and strong clubs. We expect that next season our first division will have five teams, while the second division will remain at four teams; Rugby League Club Podbara will take the place of the promoted club in the second division. This plan will give us nine clubs in 2012.“
