Duhaney Park go in search of their second silverware tomorrow (Saturday) when they face the Jamaica Defence Force in the JRLA National Cup final.
The Red Sharks are so far undefeated in 2016 having won 15 consecutive games and, if successful, it will give them the double having triumphed 50-8 over GC Foster College in last week’s Grand Final to take their fourth title.
That match was played at the Alpha Boys Institute ground in Kingston and took added significance as former Great Britain coach Brian Noble and other staff members of Toronto Wolfpack, soon to enter the English professional leagues, watched the game in an effort to scout players.
Duhaney Park were excellent with man of the match Ryan Grant claiming 20 points from two tries and seven goals against his former team. He was well supported by Nathan Campbell with two tries and Leon Thomas, Kenneth Walker and Mathew Simms who crossed for one each.
GC Foster’s points came from Keita Bryan who scored a try and Kareem Harris with two conversions.
In the Cup semi-finals, GC Foster again came undone to the Red Sharks whilst the Army men got past Spanish Town Vikings and the military men will be buoyed by the return to form of captain Orien Smith who missed several games early in the season due to injury.
JRLA director of rugby, Romeo Monteith, commented: “Duhaney Park have really matured as a unit on the field and they are deservedly winning championships after years of finishing second. We are happy with the competition this year, there are a lot of young, enthusiastic players who have a bright future in the game and it was refreshing to see a new club Washington Blvd. Bulls join the competition and get in the mix.”
