Rugby League Norge (RLN), the recognised International Rugby League member for Norway, has moved a further step towards full government recognition as it has received the written confirmation of its membership of the Norwegian Rugby Federation (NRF) and therefore, the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports (NIF). 

NRF is the umbrella body for several “rugby related” sports in Norway as neither rugby code nor the related sports, such as Gaelic football, reach the threshold for full recognition by the government in Norway. It is not controlled by rugby league or by rugby union however, rugby league has the largest number of member clubs.

Crucially now, RLN’s membership of IRL is recognised and approved by the federation and that gives them the formal approval to represent Norway in international competition. Also, as a member of NRF, RLN is recognised as the group organising rugby league with its own budget from NIF based upon the size of membership. 

RLN President, Karl-Fredrick Velle said;

“This agreement is the next step towards a clearer and more consistent organization of rugby activities in Norway. RLN is pleased that the agreement is signed and that both RLN and NRF can now look forward to developing better and broader activities for children, youths and adults. 

“Our preparation for RLWC2021 can continue and grow once the restrictions in place to combat COVID-19 are lifted. As several of our players are in higher risk categories, it is unlikely that we will recommence our wheelchair activity until September 1st.”
