The Jamaican rugby league squad is in training for next month’s international against Canada, which continues their preparations for the autumn’s 2013 Rugby League World Cup Qualifiers.
The clash for the 2011 Carnival Cup will be played on Sunday, July 31st at Fletchers Field, Markham, Ontario and will be staged during the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival in Toronto.
The Wolverines are looking to avenge the 32-12 defeat they suffered against rugby league’s ‘Reggae Boys’ in the 2010 Atlantic Cup in the USA.
JRLA Chairman Ventley Brown has expressed his gratitude to Canada Rugby League for facilitating the game. “The CRL, headed by Eric Perez and Corey Tukeli, have done a tremendous job in organizing this fixture, it means a lot to us to play this game on Jamaica Day during the festival and we hope many Caribbean fans will come out in support of the team.”
The Jamaicans will be without their UK professionals and will depend on a strong domestic based squad.
According to JRLA Development Officer Romeo Monteith, “We are definitely growing each year and would like to see other local corporate partners support this fantastic game.”
“It’s the world’s toughest team sport and it promotes discipline and camaraderie like no other sport can, these are qualities desperately needed in our young men.”
Regarding the game against Canada, he added, “It will be a tremendous test and Canadian coach Jamie Lester has already warned us that his boys are up for the game. We must make sure we are ready to respond to that challenge.”
