SCOTLAND RL INCREASE MEN’S COMPETITION

29 Apr 2025

Scotland Rugby league has added a fourth club to their men’s domestic competition with the formation of Glasgow’s West End Warriors. Their opening fixture on 17 May will see them host defending champions Edinburgh Eagles at West of Scotland RFC, with Forth Valley Vikings facing Glasgow RL in their season start.

One of those behind the new venture is no stranger to Scotland RL. Niall Hall has represented a number of clubs within the Scottish game during his playing career which has seen recognition at international level on multiple occasions, including as captain of the men's domestic team that faced the Netherlands in 2024.

“Like many great ideas, the foundation of a team in the West End began in the pub! But it’s quickly become a reality.” Hall said. “ We’re thrilled by the level of interest, especially from rugby union players in Glasgow keen to try their hand at league over the summer. While we know we’ll face tough competition from more established teams, we’re excited to see where we can finish come August.”

Scotland RL’s, Barry McGuffog, noted; “As the vast majority of the West End Warriors team will be new to rugby league, I look forward to seeing how they get on. The fact that we sent an entirely domestic-based team to the Netherlands last year has spiked interest.

“Guys that play union over winter have returned to their clubs as capped internationals with heritage numbers and some teammates have identified that rugby league can potentially provide them with opportunities and recognition that rugby union can't.”

Each team will play the others home and away over the course of the season. The final round of the regular season is on 19 July, with play-offs following and the Grand Final taking place on Saturday 9 August.

There will also be three 9s tournaments throughout the league season the first acting as the opener on 10 May in Edinburgh, with Glasgow hosting on 7 June and the sides visiting Forth Valley on 5 July for their event.
