RED SHARKS TRIUMPH IN JAMAICAN CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDER

12 Sep 2011

Duhaney Park Red Sharks claimed their first national title in six attempts after defeating defending holders Vauxhall Rugby Club 20-18 at the Red Stripe Oval. As expected, the game matured into an epic battle between the juggernauts of rugby league in Jamaica and the large crowd on hand was treated to a very entertaining game.

Vauxhall were first out of the blocks when quick passing through the backline got the ball to winger Trevor Morris who crashed over in the left hand corner after only three minutes, Mohenjo Thompson added a fine conversion for a six point lead. Duhaney Park levelled four minutes later when excellent support play saw full back Renaldo Wade (pictured, with the ball) sent through the middle by Joseph Shae to score between the posts and Ryan Grant converted. Vauxhall regained the lead when Everton Richards was fouled on the try line and the referee awarded a penalty try, Thompson again kicking the conversion but again the Sharks responded when winger Robert Rodney raced in untouched just before the end of the first half and Grant again nailed the conversion.

Duhaney Park took the lead at the start of the second half, centre Ryan Grant slotting over a penalty in front of the posts and that was increased to eight points when Renaldo Wade crashed in for his second try on 48 minutes, Grant adding the difficult conversion from the left corner. Vauxhall answered with a brilliant solo effort from winger Mohenjo Thompson who skillfully evaded two defenders and crashed over near the posts and he goaled. Vauxhall tried valiantly to regain the lead but were repeatedly thwarted by Red Sharks solid defence and they hold on for an historic success.
