The Pardubice Jets have become the third CZRLA Championship team to win the League Leaders Trophy in as many years. Although Lokomotiva Beroun still have a match in hand against Prague Vikings this week they cannot catch the Jets even with a win on Saturday. Pardubice secured the 2011 League Leaders title with a dogged 12-8 win over the fast finishing Vikings in front of their home crowd in their final regular season game. The Jets, coached by Mirek Horacek and captained by Victor Leeuw, finished the regular season with 5 wins from 6 games, as well as being the leading Czech team in the Czech international 9s tournament held in Pardubice over the Easter long weekend.
In a reflection of the development taking place within Czech domestic rugby league, for the first time a grand final match will take place between the teams at the head of the Czech Championship once the regular season rounds are completed this weekend.
Jets standout player on the day, Lukas Bohm, was exhultant about the club’s win. In his first season of rugby league he has shown rapid advancement, and said of the victory: “It is really great that Pardubice have won the title, and we will have a great party in celebration of that tonight. We are looking forward to another game with Beroun now though, to prove that we really are the best team in the 2011 Czech Championship.”
In another indication of Czech rugby league development, Pardubice’s final home match was complemented by a primary schools tag rugby league tournament involving 3 local junior clubs, with Opatovice coming out on top with 2 wins from 3 matches, and Horni Jeleni finishing second with a win over the Pardubice junior team.
