23 Sep 2013

Duhaney Park Red Sharks secured a hard-fought victory over defending champions Vauxhall Vultures in the finals of the National Club Championship, winning an exciting match 28-23 at Red Stripe Park in Kingston.

Vauxhall's Mohenjo Thompson kicked the two early penalties and a later field goal while Duhaney Park got on the score board when speedster Fabion Turner darted over the try line on 10 minutes. Vauxhall replied soon after with a try from bustling second row Jahdeek Clarke, however, Duhaney Park dominated the remainder of the half and scored three additional tries courtesy of Nathan Campbell, Robert Rodney and Andre Reid. At the half time whistle, they held a 16-9 lead and seemed poised to pull away from the champs.

Vauxhall had other plans and came out a different team in the second half. They attacked relentlessly and had Duhaney Park reeling under their assault. They scored a quick try through winger Andrew Hylton to trail 13-16. Jermaine Pinnock replied with a converted try to put Duhaney Park up 22-13. Vauxhall then hit back with two quick tries, only one of which was converted and claim a narrow 23-22 lead.

Duhaney Park regained their composure and scored against the run of play when Nathan Campbell busted through several tackles and raced 40 meters for the decisive try under the sticks. The conversion saw Duhaney Park with a 28-23 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining. Vauxhall would not give up and should have scored in the 75th minute when Kemar Gray went over the try line, however, he failed to see Duhaney Park's winger Robert Rodney who dislodged the ball from his hand as he was about to score the try. That dramatic  play sealed the Championship for Duhaney Park, their second title in three years.
