Spanish Town and St Catherine High emerged victorious at Campion College on completion of the Jamaican Schools Championships. Spanish Town took the U19s crown while St Catherine’s triumphed at U16 level.

The Championships are contested by eight high schools divided into two groups and run from October to February. The U19 competition is played 13-a-side, while the U16 features teams of 10 players. Each school is guaranteed four games.

Jamaica RL Director of Rugby Romeo Monteith acknowledged how much progress has been made in the high school game which began five years ago. “The standard continues to improve on a yearly basis,” he said. “We are thriving and hope to have additional schools join the rugby league family.”

Odane Christy and Raldon Palmer scored two tries each to help Spanish Town defend their U19 crown in a 32-21 success against Campion. Shavon Cuff and Samio Smith added a try apiece while Adrian Christie kicked four conversions.  Campion fought to the end with captain Adrian Hall contributing 13 points from two tries, two goals and a drop goal; Kyle Howard and Romaine Knight with their other touchdowns.

Flying winger Quame Green led St. Catherine to an 18-6 victory over defending champions Spanish Town High in the U16 final, scoring two tries and adding a conversion for a 10 point haul. He was supported by Dominic Brown who scored a try and kicked two goals. Andrew Cameron posted Spanish Town’s try, Romeish Smith with the extras.
