Spanish Town High proved once more that they are the number one U19 rugby league high school in Jamaica, after a dramatic 14-12 win over St. Catherine High in the Grand Final.
St. Catherine High led 12-10 with seven minutes remaining but a brilliant chip kick from Spanish Town's Adrian Christie found winger Rameish Smith in space who reached over in the right hand corner to seal an emotional win.
"I told the players, win or lose the school is proud of them for being in their third straight final”, said winning coach Shane Brown. “We are extremely happy and look forward to again defending the crown next season."
Stephen Scott, coach of St. Catherine High, was also proud of his charges. “We were let down by too many errors in the first half, we rallied and took the lead but just couldn't hold on.
“I feel gutted for the boys but we are proud to have made the finals.”
JRLA Director of Rugby Romeo Monteith had high praise for the premier youth competition.
“It was executed without any issues,” he commented. “We are pleased with the technical improvement of all the teams and the commitment shown by the schools.
“The Association will continue to ensure the students have well organized competitions to compete in. "
