Match report

Damon Koolstra led the way for the Netherlands with two tries and five goals as they defeated Scotland 34-26 in an exciting clash at sunny Sassenheim in front of an appreciative crowd.

The Wests Tigers Mackay scrum half opened and closed the try scoring for the hosts and controlled the game. “It was an outstanding effort even though we gave Scotland some easy ball,” said Netherlands men’s head coach Dave Hunter. “We defended our line well and the players dug deep for each other, that’s what got us the win. We had good impact from the bench, our debutants went really well and it was the physical type of game we needed.”

Mitch Donnelly’s touchdowns either side of half time were also significant in the victory.

Scotland fielded a side exclusively of debutants as they rewarded domestic players, with fourteen born in the country and were competitive throughout. Head coach, Adam Houston, commented: “I’m proud of the effort the boys have shown all the way through and this is hopefully just the start of things.

“We gave full international debuts to 17 players today, the first time that has happened since game one in 199 which is fantastic, especially as they all came through our pathways. The lads are disappointed but we will regroup and move forward with renewed excitement.”
