Wales warmed up for the Gillette Four Nations Series in confident fashion with a 30-6 win over Ireland in Neath. South Wales Scorpions duo Andrew Gay and Christiaan Roets both scored tries on their home ground and others came from Mark Lennon, Elliot Kear, Jordan James and debutant Tyson Frizell, while Ian Webster kicked three goals.

Wales, who meet England in Leigh next Saturday, were leading 30-0 until Ireland claimed a late consolation try through winger Tim Bergin, with Liam Finn adding the goal.

"It was a good hit-out for them physically," said coach Iestyn Harris. "Some of the guys haven't played for up to six weeks and it takes a while to get into the flow of things. There are certainly some things to work on but I'm not too displeased. Hopefully we can improve a fair bit this week and tweak what we need to so we're ready for England."

Harris gave run-outs to 21 members of his Four Nations squad, with captain Lee Briers and Aled James missing due to illness and Gareth Thomas absent for personal reasons.

"He (Gareth) has some family issues that he's dealing with," Harris said. "We'll know more in the middle of next week."

The result leaves Ireland coach Mark Aston still looking for his first win, following last Sunday's defeat by Scotland in Glasgow, but he was proud of his young team's efforts.

"We were busted up and down on numbers today and the boys got a lot of credit and character out of the game," he said. "They put their bodies in places a lot of people wouldn't want to put them and I was proud of them. We've only had four sessions together. We'll get better. It's built on attitude on commitment and we've got that in abundance."
