The USA Tomahawks have secured the Colonial Cup with a comprehensive 36-14 victory over the Canadian Wolverines in Westport, Connecticut.

Canada was the first team to put points on the board when a Louis Robinson Penalty Goal put the visitors up 2-0 after five minutes. The Tomahawks response was swift with Damien O’Malveney notching a four pointer in his return to the national team. Matt Walsh added the extras and the Tomahawks led 6-2 early on.

The Wolverines looked certain to score soon after when an 80m dash from the scrum base took them deep inside the opposition’s half. The Tomahawks defense hung on and the Wolverines were unable to capitalize on the promising lead up work.

O’Malveney was relishing in his comeback to the international arena. His second try of the match in the 21^st minute extended the home side’s lead to 8; with Todd Fisher’s conversion giving the USA a handy 12-2 lead. The scoreboard remained unchanged for the rest of the half with the Tomahawks taking a 12-2 lead into the halftime break.

As they did in the first match, the Canadian’s came out of the blocks firing in the second stanza and consecutive tries to Christian Miller and Louis Robinson within the space of minutes put the Tomahawks defense immediately on notice. Both four pointers were converted by Robinson and the visitors surged to a 14-12 lead with only 10 minutes gone in the second half.

The Tomahawks lapse in concentration didn’t last long, and when Dusten Umeda crossed over the lead was regained. Todd Fisher added the extras and the USA were back in front 18-14. When Umeda scored his second try of the match the Tomahawk’s lead was extended 22-14. Todd Fisher’s conversion was successful taking the score line to 24-14 in favor of the home side.

The Tomahawks were finishing off the stronger of the two sides and when Curtis Cunz crossed over the match was all but over. The conversion was successful and the USA took a 30-14 lead.

With fulltime approaching, Louis Tulio crossed over to put the final nail in the coffin as the Tomahawks finished off a convincing 36-14 win over their archrivals.

Speaking after the match Head Coach Marcus Vassilakopoulos was impressed with his team’s performance. “The boys played really well today. We completed our sets and defended really well.” Vassilakopoulos also had praise for the opposition. “It was a tough, physical game out there today. Full credit to the Canadians, they had a great series."

Damien O’Malveney was among many standout performances for the Tomahawks. The crafty playmaker not only scored two tries, but received the MVP award for his standout performance. The award caps off a remarkable comeback from shoulder injury for O’Malveney, which he sustained during the DonnyBrook Cup match against Ireland, earlier this year.

With the win, the Tomahawks clinch the Colonial Cup for 2012, having defeated the Wolverines 2-0 in the overall series.
