WHEELCHAIR WORLD CUP GAME 1

Wales kick-started the 2013 Wheelchair rugby league world cup with a comprehensive victory over Ireland in a 19-try display.

Chris Dennett, who misses the next game against Australia, after being disciplined for a late tackle, was the top scorer with five tries.

Playmaker Mike Knight also bagged four of his own as Wales racked up a 70-0 lead at halftime.

Relentless Wales added 34 more points in the second half with Scott completed a hat trick in less than 10 minutes and captain Paul Craig took his total tally to 32 points.

There was some consolation points for Ireland as Nathan Clarke converted 3 penalties as the game reached its end.

“Ireland did really well not to let their heads go down,” said Wales captain Craig.

“In a competitive sport, if you start getting beat, it’s quite easy to loose your head. Every point they scored today meant the world to them.

“Wales have to keep playing as a unit because when we play the tougher teams like England and France it is going to get harder so we need to stay as a unit.”

The Welshmen opened their try account in the first minute of the tournament as Knight coasted through the defence and touched down to grab the advantage.

Moments later, Dennett bagged two tries in as many minutes to go 14-0 in front.Lane crossed the try line courtesy of a lightning quick offload from Knight before Dennett completed his hat trick.

With 15 minutes played, the floodgates opened as Lane added his name to the scoresheet again with captain Craig converting the extras for a comfortable 32-0 cushion.

Knight and Lane linked up once more and as Knight stumbled out of his chair, he released the ball to Lane as he crossed on the right to complete his hat trick.

After Craig and George Hill piled up the points on the scoreboard, another brilliant pass from Knight allowed Dennett to sail over for his fourth try. Craig completed his eighth goal kick of the game for a 56-0 lead.

Craig showed great determination to add more points to the scoreboard as he crashes through the line and slammed the ball on the line as he fell out of his chair.

Knight added his second try as Wales went to the locker rooms comfortably ahead at 70-0.

Wales continued the intensity in the second half as Dennett broke through the Ireland defensive line for a fifth time.

Clarke finally got Ireland on the scoreboard as his penalty kick sailed over the posts but it was still one-way traffic with Wales ahead by 86-2 after two tries in quick succession from Turner.

With 15 minutes to play, Clarke successfully scored another penalty to take Ireland’s tally to four points.

As the game came to a close, Wales surpassed the 100-point mark after more scores from Knight and Turner.

Clarke completed his third penalty kick of the game to finalise the scoreline at 104-6.
