Match report
On a perfect night for Rugby League, the Canada Wolverines lined up to face the 9th ranked USA Tomahawks in the 5th Colonial Cup Championship match at Lamport Stadium in Toronto. The United States had one all 4 previous tournaments and were firm favourites to take the cup again after their brilliant performance in the World Cup in England. A massive crowd of 7,356 jammed into the ground and they were not disappointed with the display put on by both sides.
The match was a hard hitting affair and both sides traded opportunities early on. It wasn't until 18 minutes in that the score board was lit up. Hard working second rower Billy Skidgmore scoring behind the posts after a well worked move from the Wolverines. Steve Piatek added the extras to give Canada a 6-0 advantage. Five minutes later they were at it again. Christian Miller making a lovely run before offloading to a streaking Jonathan Cregg who touched down under the sticks. Piatek once again tacked on the extras to make the score 12-0. A great start from the Canadians. Ten minutes later and it was the USA that opened their account. Arber Corbaj touching down a Matt Walsh grubber in the corner for the score. Two minutes later the Wolverines responded when Enoch Wamalwa powered his way in from 30 metres out. Steve Piatek did the business with the extras and the halftime score read Canada 18 the USA 4.
The second half started much better for the Americans. Two minutes into the second stanza captain Matt Walsh scoring with a dummy scoot from 2 metres away. Walsh tacked on the extras to make it 18-10 and the match was well and truly all to play for. This try awakened the beast and Canada took control. Three minutes later Jonathan Cregg notched his brace when he scored in the corner after some flowing Rugby League from the home side. Ten minutes later they were at it again, this time Christian Millers brilliant run and pass was finished by Tom Clancy.
Steve Piatek adding the extras making the score 28-10. Five minutes later Canada crossed the glory line once again when Denny McCarthy reached over after a powerful run and stiff arm to score. Steve Piatek did what he does and the score now read 34-10. The gap increased further when captain Matt Wyles scored with three defenders on him. Piatek added the extras making it 40-10. Enoch Wamalwa notched his brace splashing in under the posts from 20 metres out to put the game well and truly out of reach for the USA. Steve Piatek successful on the conversion. Brett King then went over after a zig zagging run to finish the scoring for Canada. Piatek added the extras once again going 8 for 9 on the night.
The USA scored the final try showing great heart as CJ Catalano scored in the corner. It was not enough however as the Canada Wolverines closed out their 2014 season in the perfect way, with an emphatic 52-14 victory over the World Cup quarterfinalists the USA Tomahawks, and their first ever Colonial Cup win. Coach Stu Donlan had this to say. "A brilliant result from the lads, our progression over the 9 weeks I've been here is nothing short of phenomenal. The future for Rugby League in Canada is looking bright as the sun."
