EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP - GAME ONE

Wales were outclassed in pouring rain in Workington as Scotland, led by Danny Brough, scored three tries in the first 11 minutes of the second half to make a flying start to their European Championship campaign.

The Welsh started well but fell away as mistakes crept in from the inexperienced youngsters giving Scotland a 42-18 win. Rhys Williams had an early try denied for a forward pass but the Dragons did take the lead on 10 minutes. Peter Lupton kicked and Rhys Williams collected well to ground in the corner. Ricky Hough missed the conversion.

The lead didn’t last long. Danny Brough scored in the corner following a Welsh error from kick-off, converting himself. Brough created the second Scotland try from the first set after kick-off setting up Oscar Thomas nicely to go over in the corner. Brough missed the kick. Another Welsh error gave Scotland the scrum on Wales' 10 metre line. They didn't waste the opportunity as Corbay Kilday scored on his debut with Brough converting.

A high tackle on Morgan Evans was a sour point of the first half but it led to three successive Wales penalties and from the last one, a good passing move saw Christiaan Roets score in the corner - his 12th Wales try of all time pulling level with Iestyn Harris in the Wales try scoring charts. Hough failed to convert. 16-8 down at the break. An early second half try for Wales gave them hope. Connor Farrer dived on a Lupton grubber and Lewis Reece converted.

But Scotland hit back straight away. Jonny Walker running through from their first set after kick-off following a Welsh defensive error. Brough converted. The rain and wind picked up and Scotland utilised it to their advantage. Brough kicked high which confused the Welsh defence and David Scott beat Tom Hughes to the ball to extend the Scottish lead to 28-14. Then from a penalty, Callum Phillips was given too much space to run through for Scotland's sixth try. Brough missed the kick.

The next try came from a good passing move left Wales exposed on the wing and Oscar Thomas set up David Scott to walk over. Brett Phillips added another Scottish try that Brough duly converted. That made it 42-14.But Wales had the final say with a consolation try. Connor Farrer beat the wind and rain and scored near to the corner for a second try on an excellent debut from the South Wales Scorpions star.
