EUROPEAN WHEELCHAIR CHAMPIONSHIP – 3RD PLACE PLAYOFF

Ireland came through a bruising encounter with Scotland to achieve third place with a 20-16 triumph.

Scotland opening the scoring through Steven Carling, the Irish getting back on level terms when Dom Richards capped off a great move. Scotland was then reduced to four men when Michael Mellon was sent to the sin bin for an eye-poke on Stuart Walker, the resulting penalty converted by Tom McCarthy.

Ireland doubled their lead just before half time as Scotland conceded another penalty and McCarthy again stepped up to convert the kick.

Dillon Neill waltzed around to score in the corner to extend the Irish advantage at the start of the second period. Mellon was reintroduced and got the ball down over the try line in the corner to start the Scottish revival, then setting up Dan Grant.

Grant was then sent to the sin bin for unnecessary roughness on Richards meaning the Scots had to play the rest of the game with four men.

From the resulting penalty Ireland won the game when Richards raced to the corner to score his second try.
