28 Jan 2013

The 2013 Intercollegiate rugby league season is off to a pulsating start, with games played on Thursday and Saturday. Six teams are challenging for the right to be called champions, including new comers Excelsior Community College. Old foes Mico University College, University of the West Indies, GC Foster College, Portmore Community College and the University of Technology make up the remaining combatants. All teams will play each other twice; the top four will then play off in a semifinal. The grand final will be on April 18.

On Thursday, defending champions GC Foster outclassed PCC 44-4 at the GC Foster College grounds. GC’s high powered offense was led by freshman Prop Antonio Baker who smashed his way to three tries.

On Saturday Mico visited UTech where they carved out a 34-10 victory. They were led by monster winger and last year’s leading try scorer, Astil Johnson, who bagged a hat trick of tries. Trinidadian national Kurland Duke kicked a conversion.

Over at the Mona Bowl, UWI showed no mercy to debutants EXCED and dished out a crushing 96-8 beating. For UWI, Jerome Ottey (4), Junior Samuels (4) and Sydonnite Jeanite (3) the try-scoring way. Whyte kicked 12 conversions. EXCED never gave up throughout the contest and were rewarded with two tries in the second half through Ryan Howell and former St. George’s high standout, Jonothan Lynford.

The competition continues on Thursday with UTech hosting GC Foster at 4pm, then on Saturday, Mico takes on EXCED at 2pm and PCC battles UWI at 4, both games will be at Excelsior Community College.
