Serbia got the first RLEF Under-16 European Cup off to a fine start with an exhilerating opening match victory against the fancied Russians. Skipper Filip Brkić was the dominant player on the field. He opened the scoring with a try in the third minutes and went on to register 14 of his side's points.
Down 16-6 at the break, Russia fought back with front row Vadim Teptsov's 36th minute try, but then Brkić re-established the two-score cushion with a penalty before wing Dragan KranjÄec wrapped it up with his 51st minute try, the final score of the match.
