UAE Rugby League has held its Annual General Meeting at the Jumeirah Beach Residence in Dubai.
The meeting launched the 2015 domestic competition – to be known as the Rugby League Cup - the Board approving applications from four clubs; Al Ain Amblers, Abu Dhabi Harlequins, Xodus Wasps and Dubai Sharks.
An important milestone to come out of the AGM was the appointment of a new chief operating officer, George Yiasemides.
He will be in charge of implementing strategies to further develop the sport and enhance the commercial aspect of the UAERL, including sponsorship acquisition and government recognition.
“Our first priority is to establish a solid infrastructure and an executive committee that will strategically develop and grow the profile of rugby league within the UAE,” said Yiasemides.
“In order to progress and move forward we must gain government recognition as a sporting entity and become an Affiliate Member of the Rugby League European Federation, that is an absolute necessity which will inevitably attract funding and secure the future of the UAERL.”
Remond Safi, MEA Regional Director for the Rugby League European Federation - who was present at the AGM - added, “I am confident that with the newly installed COO, and the re-appointment of UAERL president Sol Mokdad, that the sport will move in the right direction to take the game to its next level.”
