The first Serbian U18 tournament in rugby league 9s kicked off on Saturday 29th May 2011 with the first tournament for Belgrade and Vojvodina clubs. In the Belgrade U18 Championship four clubs – Dorcol, Red Star and Stari Grad from the city and Radnicki from Nova Pazova in Vojvodina region - participated. More than 50 boys participated in a tournament won by Radnicki, the biggest success in the club’s history.
The tournament was organized by the Belgrade Rugby League Federation in cooperation with Rugby League Club Red Star who committed their 3G pitch. Radoslav Novakovic, President of the Belgrade Rugby League Federation, issued the following statement:
’’The start of the U18 competition fits our 2011-2014 development strategy. We plan to spread U18 and U16 categories to every club in Serbia, where at moment we have youth development in six clubs: Dorcol, Stari Grad, Red Star, Radnicki, Soko and Morava. We hope that in the future we will have youth activity in Car Lazar, Nis and Podbara. Our priorities are U18 and U16, as these young players are quickly turning out for the open age teams and this increases our base of senior players. I also wanted to take the opportunity to thank Hainault Bulldogs from London who donated a set of equipment for Stari Grad. Without that equipment these lads couldn't play in this tournament.“
The next tournament will be the Serbian U18 Rugby League 9s tournament, whcih will feature six clubs, including a new club, Soko from Vranje region.
