The 2011 Sweden Super League has reached the halfway point, with the Borås Ravens topping the table after an impressive couple of victories. Rugby league pioneers Spartacus Reds have had a disappointing start with two losses from two while newcomers Gothenburg Lions can be relatively pleased with their record of one victory and one defeat.

"We're delighted with the season so far," said Sweden Rugby League chairman Scott Edwards. "We have three teams competing in the first ever national competition, which is great preparation for our upcoming Nordic Cup matches against Denmark [the full Nordic Cup fixture list is yet to be finalised]." The Danes travel to Gothenburg on 2 July and most of the Swedish team will have participated in the Swedish Super League. Especially pleasing for the national selectors is the fact that so many younger Swedish players are trying out the sport. Several of the Gothenburg Lions squad are under 20, with Spartacus and Borås also fielding a good mix of young and experienced players.

"We've been quite impressed by the level of skill shown by the players in the league so far" continued Edwards. "One of the reasons for this is that we were able to send three coaches over to London for the RLEF's coaching workshop in March. The coaches learnt a lot at that course, and were able to pass on what they learnt to some very enthusiastic Swedish players when they got home."

The teams in this season's league are all from the west of the country, and the SRL hopes to see teams from the rest of Sweden compete in the 2012 competition. "Sweden's size can make it difficult when organizing a new sport" said Edwards. "However, we've now got three very committed teams in the west, and we're keen to get more clubs involved."
