INAUGURAL GREEK WOMEN’S GRAND FINAL TO BE STAGED

8 Apr 2023

Aris Eagles will face Attica Rhinos in the first-ever Greek Women’s Grand Final tomorrow (Sunday) at the Gkorytsa Stadium, Aspropyrgos (kick off 6pm local time). The sides have met twice in the regular season, which comprised of four teams, winning one game each.

Both teams contain a number of national players and Greek state-run TV channel ERT have previewed the clash, interviewing Rhinos captain, Styliani Markou. “The days leading up to the Grand Final have been full of joy and also big anticipation,” she said. “We have been working all season towards this moment and both myself and all my team-mates are expecting our toughest match yet. We cannot wait.”

Aris co-captain, Asimina Mastoraki, commented: “Reaching the national women's grand final, that in itself would have sounded like it wasn't real a few years ago when we were just starting out, yet here we are! You can imagine how excited we all are about this match, we have been preparing well in a season that had a lot of ups and downs. We had two very tough matches against the Rhinos this season and we expect the final to be no different. The only certainty is that, no matter which team lifts the trophy, women's rugby league in Greece has already won!”

Beforehand, from 11am-5pm there will be the largest men's 9s tournament held by the GRLF featuring eight Athens teams, including newcomers Promitheas Dafni making their debut appearance.
