Under beautiful weather conditions, the Rheinland Pfalz women’s rugby league side commenced their 2011 with a Saturday training session. Under a sunny sky in Hochspeyer 15 women from the state of Rheinland Pfalz were put through their paces by RLD Development Manager Uwe Jansen.
Five women from Kaiserslautern, four from Saarbrücken and six from Trier were trying their hand at rugby league for the first time. Jansen was impressed how quickly the young ladies came in to the game and after the training Uwe Jansen spoke about the possibility to take part in some competitions in the future.
“The girls are interested but it we are still not sure that our quality on the field will be good enough [to play other European nations],” said Jansen. “The next step is to look for more interested women in other regions of Germany”. The next training session will be in May, again in Hochspeyer, with the probability of a larger number of players.
Laetitia Kissel, an experienced rugby union player in Rheinland Pfalz, said after the session: “It would be great to continue with rugby league; it will be an big option to represent your country on an international level.”
Training sessions are planned on a monthly basis for the time being.
