Wheelchair Tag Rugby League and Rugby League Nines have been officially recognised as disciplines of Rugby League this week by the five UK Sports Councils. The RFL has been recognised as the National Governing Body for both versions by Sport England, Sport Northern Ireland, Sport Wales, sportscotland and UK Sport in a move which will greatly aid in their development.

David Gent, the RFL’s Director of Participation and Strategic Partnerships, said: “We’re delighted that the five Sports Councils have recognised Wheelchair Rugby League and Rugby League Nines as official disciplines of the sport. This development will help the continuing growth of both versions of the sport as we look to introduce more and more people to Rugby League. We’ve seen remarkable growth within Wheelchair Rugby League since England won the World Cup in 2008 with new teams forming and interest from across the UK. Now that the discipline has been officially recognised I’m sure we will attract even more athletes to take part.

"Rugby League Nines is a great tool for introducing new players to the sport at both junior and senior level and is important as we continue to expand the sport geographically into new areas where there may initially not be enough players for full 13-a-side games.  Nines is a fast and skilful derivative which provides great entertainment as was demonstrated by the successful Rugby League Nines tournament in July.”
