Match report

FRIENDLY INTERNATIONAL

Canada avenged November’s Atlantic Cup defeat with a convincing 40-10 victory over Jamaica in Markham Ontario in the Caribbean Carnival Cup. It was the Wolverines’ first victory in international rugby league and according to CRL chairman Eric Perez, “Signals Canada’s intentions to be a force in international rugby league.”

The match, played as an official event of the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto, offered Jamaica little in the way of celebrations in the seven-tries-to-two loss.  Stu McReynolds opened the scoring with a penalty goal on six minutes for the Wolverines, full back Robin Legault touching down four minutes later.  McReynolds then crossed for a try to add to two conversions to give the hosts a 14-0 lead.

Jamaica – a domestic competition only selection - were lifted through a powerful touchdown from Vauxhall Vultures forward Sandino Hastings, capping the visitors’ first spell of sustained pressure.  But two Danny Tupou tries either side of the break secured the historic victory. Canada’s young Harlequins Academy prop Louis Robinson scored on debut to make it 28-4 before Romaen Campbell touched down for the visitors, Marvin Thompson adding the extras but that proved to be consolation.

Two tries in the last quarter from Chris Daimond and Trent Hansen wrapped things up securing, according to Perez, “A great win for Canada, for rugby league in Canada, and for each and every player that has put in so much time and effort to make this happen.”

Captain Stephen Conlon added, "We're very happy with the result, and to be able to avenge our loss in Jacksonville last year."
