Match report

Both Thailand, coached by Brian Smith, and Hungary, coached by Jonathan Wilson, entered the game off the back of 2 strong Test Match wins against El Salvador and Uruguay just 4 days earlier.

The match almost did not go ahead, with the planned venue, Erskineville Oval, flooding due to severe weather in Sydney in the 48 hrs leading up to the match. Finding a ground that was not water damaged was even more difficult, with an all-weather field at Endeavour Sports High being found in the 11th hour.

The match was a very physical encounter on a wet Sydney evening. Much like the previous match for Hungary, the Magyar Bulls were over to crash over first in the match. The game went back and forth, but the Hungarians goal line defence was outstanding for the second test match in a row.

The Magyar Bulls were able to go into the sheds at half time with an impressive 22-0 lead.

The second half saw Thailand get on the score board early, with both teams taking turns to cross over the try line in the early exchanges. In the final 20 minutes of the game, Hungary were again able to pull away from the Thailand National Rugby League side, and were able to race away to a 44 – 10 win.

Once again, the stars of the show for Hungary were the skilful Farkas brothers. Their combinations as the fullback, 5/8, halfback and hooker proved to be too skilful for their opponents. Also strong upfront for the Hungarians were the Tóth brothers. Joseph and Stephen Tóth were able to play their first Test Match for Hungary together after Stephen missed the Uruguay game with an ankle injury suffered in the Cabramatta International 9’s.

The Tóth brothers, together with Károly Acsai made up the Hungarian Front Row, and were able to lay a strong platform for the Farkas brothers to weave their magic to the screams of the Hungarian supporters.
