DOMESTIC SEASON KICKS OFF IN KENYA

10 May 2023

The opening fixtures of the new domestic season have been played in Kenya. Eight teams play in the men’s premiership, with 2022 champions Winam beginning their defence with a 38-0 home win over Centurion.

In the other matches, Rift Valley Ruffians defeated Ngong 24-0; in a thriller a try four minutes from time by Omburu Lemuel – his second of the game – saw Wolves overcome Rhinos 36-32; and Elvis Otieno ran in four tries as AP Warriors triumphed 76-22 over Kitengela Sharks.

In the second division Counties League, Rift Valley defeated Ngong 32-6, and in the opening women’s game between the two sides, Rift Valley were again victorious, 24-6.

The Premiership and Counties knockout cup competitions start on 20 May.

Kenya Rugby League director of growth & development, John M’Bai, said: “Our Championship structure has gone through progressive transformation to enable the federation to achieve multiple goals. Key among them is giving more playing opportunities for our athletes, and creating better pathways for our players to get into the game and eventually get selected to our national teams if successful.

“We are also aligning our season to the international calendar and getting closer towards achieving full membership status which we are currently working on. We are in talks with some nations about playing some international matches this year which will now include age grade and women's teams. These are exciting times for the federation, and we are encouraged and optimistic about what the future holds.”
