The Rugby League Federation Ghana has launched the sport in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti region, as part of the Salford Red Devils partnership programme.

A tag event was held at Akrofrom D/A Junior High School featuring four teams, boys, girls, old boys and teachers, with each player presented with a certificate of participation, recognizing their involvement.

It was attended by Nana Kofi Krah II, the chief of Afigya Kwabre South District, who expressed his delight at witnessing the new sport, together with Adu-Poku Christian (District Director of Education) and students, teachers, and community members from across the area.

Philip Asibey, the Physical and Health Education (PHE) coordinator for the district, acknowledged the initial challenges of starting a new sport due to a lack of equipment but added: “I intend to introduce rugby league to other schools in the district and to incorporate the sport as a curtain raiser for upcoming inter-school games.”

Selorm Sil Kuwornu from the RLFG commented: “The Ashanti Region is poised to become a vibrant hub for rugby league. The collective support and enthusiasm demonstrated by all involved indicate a bright future.”

Julius Amevour, Ashanti region manager, said: “The district has a reputation for being passionate about sports, I’m sure that the launch event will also draw significant interest from schools and communities in the North Kwabreh area.”
