EDINBURGH FACE GLASGOW IN SCOTLAND RL GRAND FINAL

2 Aug 2024

Old rivals Edinburgh Eagles and Glasgow RL will contest the Scotland Rugby League Grand Final tomorrow (Saturday) at the Cambuslang Rugby Club on the outskirts of Glasgow (kick off 3pm). Beforehand Scotland take on Ireland in two U16s fixtures at 12pm and 1.30pm showcasing the young domestic talent coming through.

The Eagles narrowly won both encounters between the sides during the regular season, 38-28 at home and 30-20 away.

”At the start of this season we had a couple of minor hiccups, but we managed to get going and now we’re about to round things off at Cambuslang,” said SRL cubs liaison officer, Barry McGuffog.

“This season has probably been the most competitive since I first became involved. Under new head coach Kris Hendrie, Glasgow have made huge progress this year and their round one game at Edinburgh set the tone for both their season and that of the competition.

“The home playoff game was decided it the last round of the regular season and victory at Forth Valley Vikings gave Glasgow that all important advantage. With victory in that game, they now face an Edinburgh Eagles side looking to retain the title and add it to the League Leaders Shield.”

McGuffog added: “Both Edinburgh and Glasgow games this season have been closely contested and quite heated at times so I’m looking forward to the Grand Final with both being able to name strong squads with quality players, I think it’ll be an excellent advert for domestic rugby league in Scotland.

“During the offseason, we’ll look to build on the progress of the last couple of years and get some courses on for both coaches and officials. We need to look at recruiting and qualifying people in those areas so that we can then look at increasing the number of teams, potentially bringing some previous clubs back into the fold, plus increasing the number of matches. We are heading slowly in the right direction.”
