HURRICANES JAMAICA PARTNER WITH GC FOSTER COLLEGE

5 Aug 2011

Hurricanes Rugby League, Jamaica’s first professional franchise, have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with leading Jamaican sports education facility GC Foster College in St Catherine. The link-up represents a significant move forward for the Hurricanes Academy programme, with GC Foster now becoming the official training and education facility for it.

Players will have access to top class playing fields, weights room, physiotherapy and swimming pool for recovery purposes. The initial agreement also allows for further discussion relating to potential scholarships at GC Foster College for elite performing Hurricanes Academy members once they have graduated from High School.

GC Foster College and Hurricanes Rugby League will also work on curriculum relating to match officials and coach education courses to further develop the overall understanding of the game for the Academy members and once qualified they will conduct development clinics for the local communities surrounding GC Foster College and greater St Catherine, Kingston & St Andrews and Clarendon parishes.

Hurricanes owner Dane Campbell noted, “The signing of the MOU is a crucial step forward and will allow for these talented young players to not only have access to first class facilities, but also gain further education in the game of rugby league. Through the Hurricanes Academy we are trying to promote a holistic approach to player development including physical and mental preparation for training and games and off field education such as coaching techniques, nutrition information, recovery methods, drug and alcohol awareness, public speaking and becoming a role model.”
