JAMAICA 'A' GO DOWN TO BARLA TOURISTS

11 Jun 2012

Jamaica ‘A’ went down 54-10 to the BARLA Great Britain U23 tourists at the Mona Bowl in Kingston. The Great Britain team, known as the Cougars, is in the island on their Jubilee Tour with the aim of helping to develop the fast growing sport.  The British outscored Jamaica A by eleven tries to two in sunny conditions played before 600 vociferous fans.

Jamaica opened promisingly but the visitors scored first on ten minutes when Clayton Sutton found a hole in midfield and ran in untouched for the first try of the game, John Paul Brocklebank converting. BARLA went further ahead when Brocklebank threw a long pass to full back Chris Warren who dived over and they added further first half tries from Dan Sayle, Jack Ridsdill and powerful prop Jamie Fields.

The hosts pulled back a touchdown after their backs constructed a slick passing move that sent through Marvin Thompson in out wide to make it 24-4 at the break. An error from Jamaica ‘A’ from the kick off to the second half gifted BARLA the ball and they immediately punished the locals when Gavin Conroy crashed over. Two further tries in six minutes through Tom Saunders and Ross Gainford killed any hope of a home revival.

To their credit, the Jamaicans never game up and some brainstorming runs from stand half Ryan Grant and second rower Adrian Myers threatened on numerous occasions. However, BARLA scored again with Daniel Morrow darting clear on 75 minutes to bring up the half century. The locals were rewarded on the stroke of full time when winger Robert Rodney crashed over for a try between the post and scrum half Roy Calvert kicked the conversion.

The Great Britain U23s will now face the Jamaica Intercollegiate Allstars team on Wednesday June 13 at 4:30pm at the UWI Mona Bowl.
