XIII DEL DUCATO CLINCH FOURTH ITALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP

17 Jul 2013

XIII del Ducato won their fourth title in a row and were again named Italian Rugby League Champions, but this year the team from Piacenza were tested right to the last minute by the Roosters in Modena. The game began with the North West Roosters in attack and after just a few minutes they took a 4-0 lead. After a slow start the XIII del Ducato grew in confidence and began to grind down the opposition scoring four well executed tries to take an 18-4 interval lead.

The start of the second half saw the Roosters put XIII del Ducato under immense pressure and forced them to defend, clawing back the interval until, with just  5 minutes to go the Piacenza side were only ahead by 34-32. On the stroke of full time Italian international Drake Muyodi crashed over for a try which sealed the game and the fourth consecutive title.

Roosters player-coach Chris De Meyer took man of the match honours. XIII del Ducato captain Fabio Berzieri said “I am very pleased with the result. I congratulate the Roosters for their efforts, this has been the most difficult match of all the finals. They gave us big problems towards the end of the match, we were tired but we didn't give up, despite the pressure.”

Kelly Rolleston, coach of the XIII del Ducato, said: “the level of Italian rugby league is on the rise and today's game is the proof of this.”
