SPANISH REVEL IN FIRST RUGBY LEAGUE TEST WIN

27 May 2014

Coach Darren Fisher and skipper Aitor Davila have been reflecting on Spain’s entry in to the rugby league Test arena, which saw them beat Belgium 12-10 on Saturday in Brussels, in their first international hit out.

With six clubs having been formed this year in their domestic competition,  the result has proved to be a big boost to the development of the sport in the country.

“I feel very proud and it was a very emotional day for myself and the players,” said Fisher. “It is a great achievement for all involved in Spanish rugby league. The history book was written on Saturday but that's only the beginning, I believe there is much more to come.”

Fisher added, “I expected a very determined and physical game from the Belgians and that's what we got. We prepared well and I always believed we would compete hard, to get the result as well was a fantastic effort. It was great to see so much passion from the players in their shirts, they are a family.”

Spanish captain and scrum half Davila commented on the return game which will be held at the Campo de Rugby la Pelosa, Valencia, on 8 June. “Everyone in Spain is excited for our first international at home and I'm sure the Belgians will enjoy our hospitality,” he said.

“For the players it will be a great opportunity in front of friends and family to show how much pride they have for Spain RL - I can't wait for the day.”
