CIENCIAS VALENCIA CLAIM INAUGURAL SPANISH CUP

Ciencias Valencia have picked up their first silverware, winning the inaugural Spanish Cup on a sweltering afternoon in the city. The final of the six-team tournament was a triangular competition of three 40 minute games, also involving  Alcoià Comtat de Alicante and newly-crowned league champions Irreductibles Edetans.

In the opening game, Irreductibles Edetans  were dominant in the second half to defeat Alcoià Comtat 28-12, Ciencias then overcoming Alcoià Comtat, 34-0. The trophy was not decided until the last minute of the match between the two unbeaten sides, Ciencias kicking a penalty to triumph 12-10.

Ezequiel Perez-Fuster, captain of Ciencias Valencia, said: “I'm very proud of the work of my team, we've grown a lot in the last two months. To win the first-ever cup final is a dream for us.”

Aitor Dàvila, General Secretary of AERL added: “Today is a celebration for all the entire, young Spanish RL, for everything we have achieved in just one year in the life of the AERL. Ciencias should be congratulated for their victory but also the six clubs who have participated in the competition for their enthusiasm and hard work.”
