8 Nov 2014

The first rugby league training for women has taken place in the Netherlands after men’s national coach Kane Krlic introduced 18 ladies, from a variety of backgrounds, to the sport by way of playing numerous, different short games.

As well as reinforcing the rules, the players learned how to be dominant in tackles, the newly-acquired wrestling techniques being much enjoyed.

“The training progressed from no contact to full contact,” said Krlic “The players performed very well and put in a great effort; during the final game we saw some big hits, quick plays of the ball and cunning line work.

“The players did not hold back at all and It was great to see how they progressed.”

Ladies' Head Coach Lou Benders commented: "All the girls have to be applauded for their work ethic during the session.

“Kane delivered a challenging but fun session and all the girls exceeded my expectation. Afterwards, there was a great buzz around the place for the future of women’s rugby league in the Netherlands”

Her goal is to get together a side named ‘the Dutch Valkyries’ to play 13-a-side games against teams from Norway, Lebanon and Hungary.
