Following a successful first domestic season, which culminated in a visit to Accra and two-game series for the national side against the touring GB Student Pioneers, Ghana Rugby League is ready for its new campaign. The centrepiece will be the championship which will see the same six teams - Legon Skolars, Widnes Vikings Bulls, Madina Bulls, Nima Rhinos, Eck Force RL and Kaneshie Rugby League Club – face each other on a home and away basis, meaning each club will play 10 matches.

Julius Amevor, head coach of Legon Skolars, said: “Rugby league coming into the system was an eye opener, the sport has really done lots of things that most of other sports disciplines have not been able to do. Starting from the grass roots with a well-structured plan, rugby league is here to stay and my team has really worked hard at training, because we want to change our position from third place to first.”

His counterpart from the Widnes Vikings Bulls – named after a visit from the English club’s foundation in 2014 - Andrews Quaye, commented: “We can’t wait for the league to start. We really enjoy getting down and dirty.”

2015 will see a schools championship commence at the end of January featuring some of the country’s best schools with a strong sporting tradition including, Presec Legon, Armed Forces Senior High School, Our Lady of Mercy, Ebenezer Senior High School, St. Thomas Aquinas, Accra Academy and St. Johns Grammar.
