EXHIBITION WHEELCHAIR RUGBY LEAGUE MATCH ATTRACTS 200 PEOPLE

16 Jun 2011

Over 200 children, parents and volunteers watched an exhibition match of Wheelchair Rugby League last Saturday at the KMS headquarters at Cottonera.
Inspire; the organisers of a Sports Fun Day at the venue, took on the current Maltese Wheelchair Rugby League champions, the Knights, in a friendly exhibition. The match was also watched by Bernard Vassallo, Chairman for the Kunsill Malti għall-iSport (KMS).

On the pitch, it was the debut of the Newbould ‘father and son’ combination with Richard opening the scoring. The Knights then crossed to seal the match when Richard’s father Roy scored the Knights’ second try.

Inspire’s Mario Borg, who is a regular player for Inspire said “It’s good fun, especially having such a crowd watching the match too”
Borg added "I would really like to see more disabled people playing this sport in the future because it's really great fun"
Mario’s team-mate John Xuereb echoed his comments and added “The venue was fantastic too. Indoor, with seating to accommodate fans and wheelchair friendly for the players and fans also, I really enjoyed it”

Inspire currently hold the Shield from their round two victory and will hold the silverware until the season resumes after summer in November.

The Knights, Inspire, Kavallieri RFC, Overseas RFC and the Busters are all teams competing in the domestic championship. As the competition is played in a Merit League format, expressions of interest are always open for new teams.
