RUGBY LEAGUE PRESENTS TO SPORTS EQUITY CONFERENCE

9 Mar 2012

On Friday, 2nd of March 2012 in Split, Croatia, Sarah Williams, RFL Equality and Diversity Manager, attended and spoke at an extraordinary conference under the title Conte[s|x]ting SPORT , which engaged almost a hundred international, regional and local participants. The speakers included government representatives, policy makers, advocates, expert consultants, academic researchers, elite athletes, media and sport professionals, and most importantly, sport organizers and enthusiasts. The conference was hosted by the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports.

The conference covered all levels of sport from grass-roots to competitive sport, through presentations of good practices; Rugby Football League Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender policies.

Williams said: “It was an honour to be asked to speak at the conference and as the governing body of rugby league [in England] we are proud that our commitment to tackling homophobia and LGBT inclusion was  recognized. The conference was informative and inspiring and I was particularly moved to hear about the efforts being made by individuals and organisations in Croatia to tackle homophobia, particularly given that there is some personal risk around speaking out. I look forward to sharing information with colleagues across Europe, to establishing contacts and partnerships and working together to promote inclusion and diversity in sport."
