TWENTY-SEVEN NEW RUGBY LEAGUE COACHES GRADUATE IN JAMAICA

A highly successful completion to the latest phase of the Rugby League European Federation’s Technical Strategy has seen 27 new coaches qualify in Jamaica to aid the sport’s expanding reach on the island.

The newcomers at grade one were put through their paces by three local coach tutors who simultaneously completed phase three of the course having been closely monitored by RLEF Coaching Manager Martin Crick.

“I was hugely impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment of the coaches,” said Crick. “All of them had given up their Easter weekend holiday and in some cases travelled considerable distances to attend. Their interest in rugby league was heartening, their questioning and discussions clear evidence of their desire to learn. Jamaican Rugby League is making huge strides and it now has 27 new coaches available to go into schools and colleges to spread the game.”

Romeo Monteith, Roy Calvert and Ventley Brown of JRLA were joined by NAMOA’s (North American Match Officials Association)  Mikhael Shammas at a four day tutor course, held at GC Foster College in Kingston, which focused on the core skills required to play rugby league and the organisation of games and drills and they delivered the grade one programme.

Caribbean Development Manager Monteith was delighted with the week-long schedule. “It was a resounding success for all involved,” he said. “Both tutors and coaching candidates were happy with the work done. This is an indication of the appetite Jamaicans are developing for rugby league."

"I am extremely proud to be one of the first rugby league coaching tutors in the Caribbean,” added reggae international Roy Calvert. “Jamaica rugby league is in good hands."
